MOBILE INTERNET TRENDS
WHY DOES TELCO 2.0 STILL MEAN TWO DEVICES?

As we continue to discuss what will happen with 4G, especially noting Verizon CTO Ivan Seidenberg’s recent comments that 4G will link “everything,” I think it’s only fair to point out one area that remains an enigma for most mobile device users despite much attention by the network vendors: separating our personal lives from our business lives. I was reminded of this during the recent CTIA show.

At a number of my various meetings, I noticed that many of us, me included, tended to put two devices out on the table as we started our briefings. I started to ask the participants in my meetings how many devices they carried, and for those with multiple devices, why. Aside from the ubiquitous laptop, when it comes to hand-held devices there seems to be a clear trend.

WIMAX TRENDS:
INDIAN AUCTIONS UNDER WAY, COULD RAISE $12BN

At long last, the much postponed Indian 3G auctions are underway, with bidding starting on Friday. After years of wrangling over reserve prices, rules and license numbers, the pent-up demand for mobile services in India is huge. For this reason, bidding is expected to be fierce, pushing prices to the high end of expectations, though the intense pressure on ARPUs in India will deter carriers from “going too crazy”, as one local analyst put it. Nevertheless, the combined proceeds of the 3G and the BWA (broadband wireless spectrum in 2.3GHz) auctions could top $12bn.

As of Monday, one provisional winning bid for a national license touched INR40.85bn ($922m), about 17% above the reserve price.The multiple-round process might take about two weeks to complete, and then the 2.3GHz auction will start two days later.
