Overview of the First LTE Deployment in Japan

NTT Docomo’s LTE network will be live before the end of 2010.  Docomo’s mobile-only asset status and available 2.4Ghz LTE spectrum suggest certain technology and architecture decisions.  This session will present a high level view of the Docomo LTE network and its rollout, including some of the key technology decisions aimed at ensuring a reliable mobile broadband experience for Japanese subscribers. This session will explore Docomo’s decision to base its deployment on smaller cell sites versus large-scale macro cells, and illustrate the need to secure all communications.

Congestion on the mobile backhaul is a major threat to the economic health of carriers; PARC’s open source CCN software protocol can shift the backhaul solution cost curve from hardware, to software, by providing fine grain caching at the LTE edge, as part of the network architecture, rather than at the more expensive application layer.
